Last man in

For those of you who work in the industry that I work in, you'll have noticed that NHS dentistry in England is on its knees or on its face.

And so, before we go any further into this, it's worth me stating here that I am absolutely clear on the fact that we need a heavily invested core dental service for the people that need it most to secure their oral health and their dignity moving forwards.

I believe that is a minimum standard for our country and nobody seems to be willing to do it politically.

But beyond that, what do we do next?

If you are the last practice in your locality to give up your NHS contract, your practice will be overrun with disenfranchised, disenchanted people who don't want to pay privately for their dentistry, but feel they have to.

You'll be left with the dross at the bottom of the barrel constantly having to apologise for the fact that you made a decision to provide good dentistry instead of the decision to provide dentistry that you don't want to do, in a system that's clearly broken.

It's worth thinking about as you're nervous, deciding which direction you want your career to take because if you are the last one in, the guys that you're going to have to look after and talk to and engage with, are going to be the ones that were the last ones to come.
