cinema

There was a time when I used to do a thing called 12 for 12 on the blog where I would post 12 books and 12 films and 12 albums through the year, one a month, just to make me seek them out as a happiness booster.

I think that it is probably time to do that again, but in the meantime, you must go to the cinema to see JoJo rabbit.

You might have heard this film mentioned or even seen a little bit about it. You might have thought it was a children’s movie or about something ridiculous but I can tell you that it is quite extraordinary.

I am not a film critic or a reviewer so I am not suggesting you go to see this on the basis of it cinematic quality (although that is extraordinary).

I have suggested that you go and see it because it will bring joy into your life and you will share it with someone and you will never forget who you were when you saw it.

Great art of any kind moves people and stays with them and changes them and that is what this movie does.

At the same time it is wonderful and terrible and dark and devastating and hilarious.

It looks utterly beautiful and sounds even better and there is almost nothing about it that isn’t perfect, at least in my opinion.

It is set in Germany towards the second World War and even parts of the soundtrack are iconic, pieces of pop music rehashed in German.

There is a part in this movie which you will never forget as long as you live. It takes your breath away and it almost stops the cinema.

I actually cried out loud at the point where it happened, while I was in the cinema with Stuart.

This is the 9th year of Stuart and I’s cinema club and this movie goes straight into the top three of the ones that I have ever seen at cinema club, right next to Dallas Buyers’ Club and Captain Fantastic.

The trailer is here and it looks amazing but it is a much, much better movie than the trailer ever makes it look.

Take one bit of advice this week, go and see it and then post here to say you did.
