Is this what we’ve become?

So, just a few minutes ago a friend of mine (whilst sitting next to me) showed me a video that was posted on YouTube on the 18th of February.

The video consists of two hugely experienced and senior implant clinicians from the UK in one of the clinician’s practices.

Both of the clinicians held high office in influential implant associations both in the UK and further afield.

The video shows one of the clinicians (arguably the most senior of the two) placing a dental implant on himself, in his lower left second molar.

It’s a ‘fun’ video made for a laugh.

In the comments section of the YouTube platform that this was listed on, the current president of the same organisation congratulates the pair.

Is this really what we’ve become?

Is this how we want to present ourselves to the public? (this video is on YouTube).

Is this how we want to present ourselves to younger members of our profession?

Is this how we want to present ourselves to other members of medical professions?

Bad enough that it’s ok to operate on ourselves but to publish it!

It’s very easy to watch this and turn it off and much harder to ask difficult questions about what has just happened.

I don’t think this is right and nor do I think that it’s the direction that we should be travelling in.
