Steve Jobs did not invent the MP3 player, it was Sony who did that.
Steve jobs saw an MP3 player when he visited Sony and then went back to develop the iPod.
Steve Jobs was a cultivator, not an innovator.
Innovators are really cultivators and the first idea is really the one that blows the market apart and makes all the money.
Cultivators look for new ideas created by other people and they refine them and improve them to go past the earlier adopter stage and then to the early majority.
If you’re sitting around trying to think about the next big thing then why not look at somebody else who has already thought about it and take their idea and make it better.
Look at people that you admire and steal from them, it is allowed; in fact, is it essential.
Today I had a meeting with Dentally (I haven’t had it yet at the time of writing this blog). They’re a cloud based practice management software system who are filtering through the market to innovate us and early adopt us, but almost certainly will blow through to the early majority and on from there.
They did not invent computer practice management software, they looked at the people who invented it and thought they weren’t getting it right and have tried to develop something better.
I don’t know if we will sign up to use them or not but it is interesting that they’re not innovators, they’re cultivators.
An innovator would be someone who was the first person to use a robot to place an implant.
An innovator will be the first person to grow a tooth gem and place it in a space and grow a tooth.
The rest of us are cultivating or copying cultivators.
It’s worth understanding the distinction between the two, much like an entrepreneur Vs a corner shop business owner (dentistry gets that distinction wrong all the time).
