In spite of me

When I was an associate dentist, something like 13 years ago, a friend of mine who works in dentistry told me that people referred to me at the practice I worked at “in spite of your boss”

What he was doing was reassuring me that if I didn’t work there anymore people would refer to me because they referred to me not to him and in fact, they suffered the fact that he was there because they wanted to work with me.

The person that told me that now works with me in the practice I own but it’s important to realise that the opposite now probably exists.

There are probably people who might send to clinicians in my practice even though they’re not particularly fond of me.

But more than that, there are probably people that don’t send because they don’t like me.

You can fixate on this problem if you want and you can try to be all things to all men, but you will lose.

In today’s ever fragmenting society and business environment it’s really, really important to be clear about who you look after, the people you want to ally yourself with and the tribe you want to create.

It’s fine for people not to want to be in that tribe but it’s not fine for you to chase after them and try to force them to come in because that will never work.
