How to learn

You’ll know if you read this regularly that I coach a football team called ‘The Mustangs’ who my son Callum plays for.

These boys are 10 and 11 now and we have been together for three years. It has been one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life.

My friend Colin Burns was down to help us on the Aesthetic Course last week and he was laughing about me being a football coach because I know nothing about football! He said to me “we’ve just been talking about your football coaching and we’ve decided that you’ve either brought in an expert to help you or you’ve read about it in a book”

What other way is there to learn or to get better?

Source the information and assimilate it. Or watch an expert and learn from them.

It turns out in the football team I brought in Louis Dunne who is a 15-year-old footballer. His Dad was one of my best friends and he was a football coach so Louis is my football knowledge.

I also have Katy who looks after the boys, helps them if they get injured, organises them and does all the stuff that I’m pretty rubbish at.

I just conduct the orchestra in our little football team and do the motivation (the things that I seem to be good at)

I once read a piece that said the best way to learn how to use Excel is to buy an expert for half a day and watch him do your work for you.

You can watch as many online tutorials as you want but to sit beside somebody who’s good at it and watch them do it - it doesn’t get any better than that.

First before you do that though it’s worth reading it in a book.
