How many pairs of cuff links?

I have a pair of cuff links, they’re made from a recycled bicycle chain. Two links from my bike chain, split and turned into two cuff links.

That would suit me.

The cuff links were bought for me by Louis Dunne two Christmas’ ago. I like to think it was a thank you present for giving him some small help in achieving his extraordinary 4,900 miles on a bike the year after he lost his dad and when he turned 14.

Might just have been a Christmas present though, but that is a little story that I tell myself like all of the other little stories that I tell myself.

I wore the cuff links when I went to China, that one time that I got to be a Lecturer overseas.

I photographed the cuff links when I had them on and sent a picture to Louis. They’re quite special to me these cuff links.

I have another pair of solid silver Paul Smith cuff links.

They were bought for me by my Wife as a wedding present and given to me on my wedding day.

They’re 20 years old and they are quite special to me.

I have one other pair of Paul Smith cuff links (actually I have several) but one other pair that was bought for me by my Brother in-law when I was an Usher at his wedding. They’re nice cuff links and a little bit special to me, but not as special as the other two pairs.

I have many other pairs of cuff links because from time to time, people think that cuff links would be a good thing to buy me. I never buy myself cuff links.

How many more pairs of cuff links do I need?

What possible reason could I give for buying more cuff links, or even for accepting more cuff links from someone else?

  • Because they’re more expensive than the ones I have?
  • Because they’re more fashionable than the ones I have?
  • Because they’re better looking than the ones I have?
  • Because they’re more special to me than the ones I have? (unlikely)

Do we pass an age where the collection of this stuff becomes less and less relevant as we’re able to see more clearly the importance of other things in our lives or other things in the world?

I don’t need any more cuff links, in fact I don’t need much of anything (perhaps just time).
