Hands up

There is this cool trick I do when I am speaking to groups sometimes.

It’s a way of introduction, I’m showing a small group of people how much they're holding back and not contributing at the very start of a session.

You stand in front of the group and you say “put your hands up as high as you can”.

You watch the group lazily and reluctantly raise their hands a little bit in the air and then you say “now raise them a bit higher” and every single person in the group does.

Then you ask “what were you scared of the first time” it’s rare that we get groups of people all together who put their hands up as high as they can but everybody is putting their hands up pretty much as high as they can at the moment.

When you try as hard as you can that’s enough.

Whether it works in the end or whether it doesn’t, it’s enough that you tried as hard as you can.

On reflection, I have encountered situations like this tons of times before.

I’ve taken massive hits in income to move to a different place at least six times in my career and this will be no different.

One of the biggest times was when I left the last Practices that I worked in when they were sold to IDH.

I was terrified.

I asked a friend of mine who had been an Associate with me in those Practices who had left afterwards “is there life after this?”. I remember asking that question vividly.

They laughed out loud and reassured me that there was.

And how there was in the last 12 years!

There is life after this to, for all of us and because we don’t know what it looks like it doesn’t mean it's not there.

Keep holding your hands up, as high as you can now, it will be alright in a minute.
