Getting sh*t done

Too much of a good thing invariably becomes a bad thing.

In my (almost a decade long) cinema club experience with one of my best friends, Stuart, we go, as much as we can, to the cinema and 1 of us chooses the film and the other 1 buys the snacks and if you choose the film you don’t tell the other guy until it comes up on screen.

This is an absolute joy and this week we went to see Amsterdam.

I’m very lucky that I have the resources now to be able to go the cinema 3 or 4 times a week but then it wouldn’t be a joy and it wouldn’t be special, and I wouldn’t remember one film from the next.

The same thing happens to the concerts that I go to with my wife.

Alison loves live music and buys tickets regularly but sometimes we find ourselves in a position where we’re going twice or three times a week and then that’s too much.

At work we try to look after people as best we possibly can, and we have socials and events and chats and all sorts of things to make it better but sometimes it’s just important to have a stretch where you get sh*t done.

The joy of the joyful moments is framed by the effort it takes to get there and the sacrifice you make to facilitate it.

Any other vision is a fool’s illusion but the quest for hedonism generally results in a disaster.
