Free and speech

You might have noticed there’s been a lot of discussion about free speech lately.

In times of controversy and disagreement it’s often useful to go backwards.

Many, many times in my life I’ve drawn inspiration from the stories of the ANC (African National Congress) and the fight for equality and freedom in South Africa in the 1980’s and 90’s when I was a boy and young man.

After ‘winning’ Desmond Tutu became a shining light of how it is to act with humility and integrity in a position of power, having for many years, been downtrodden and abused.

“Forgiving is not forgetting; it’s actually remembering - remembering and not using your right to hit back. It’s a second chance for a new beginning”.

I love this and think, where possible, you should take a breath and recite it to ourselves immediately before we lash out.
