Failing empires

All empires fail in the end, history at least teaches us that.

In my own world, in my own little corner of the universe, in the profession that we call ‘dentistry’ there are several empires failing at the moment:

  1. NHS Orthodontics.

If you’re under any illusion that NHS Orthodontics is going to survive in any shape or form as it was in 2019 or before, you are mistaken.

The world is different and had changed dramatically, it will continue to change more dramatically as far as Orthodontics is concerned.

Middle class children will no longer have the chance to receive ‘free’ tooth straightening as this will become a luxury that the country just will not pay for. This will impact dramatically on an income generation scheme that Orthodontists and the NHS had and practices and contracts will become worthless where people had counted on them for a very comfortable life after work.

If you’re in that sphere or anywhere near, are you prepared for what’s coming next?

2) Implant dentistry

Mostly, implant dentistry was ran by white ageing guys, well over 40 who reinvigorated their general practice career by introducing dental implants.

Many years ago when I was starting out it was suggested that “implant dentistry reinvigorated a generation of general dental practitioners lives”.

For all too long we’ve been living in the shadow of that, as the people who ‘run’ implant dentistry seem, on the whole, to get older and older and will look around and wonder why there is no progression through the same pathway that we took.

There is another (younger) subculture in implant dentistry who are innovating and progressing and they will definitely come and overtake the older guys who are entrenched in their ways.

If you’re not ready for this, what are you waiting for, retirement?

As with all of these things, failing empires creates massive opportunities and seeing where the opportunities lie and exist becomes one of the most important jobs we have.
