Domestique

The first time I write Domestique in the blog.

The role of the Domestique in cycling is to support the leader so that the team can win.

For all the bad things that have been uncovered about cycling to do with doping and cheating, the honour among teams and amongst domestiques is staggering to watch.

People will literally put their life on the line for their leader, for the benefit of the team and the domestique always knows their role.

Although this has become somewhat conflicted in recent times when there has been more than one leader in the Tour de France for some cycling teams, the true domestiques do exactly what their told at exactly the right time and the leaders understand that they are nothing without them.

The domestique does not win the race and it is not their job to win the race and they are not paid to win the race.

This is similar in many ways to the pacemaker whose job it is to deliver the person who wants to break the record in the running race at the right place, at the right time in order for them to go forwards.

The pacemaker is never good enough to win the race nor is that their role, nor is that for what they are paid.

I believe that sometimes in life we’re given the opportunity to be the leader but many more times in life we have the opportunity to be the domestique.

For many, even though they think they occupy a position of leadership, the execution of that role is in fact the execution of the domestique.

To deliver key people in your team to the right place at the right time in order to give them the best opportunity to snatch the chance that lies in front of them is in fact the essence of the domestique .

Many lessons to be learnt from cycling, even though it seems like a tainted sport at times.

There is honour amongst those thieves and in particular in the domestiques.
