Cultural Sensitivity

This week Richard Leonard (the newly elected leader of the Scottish Labour party) explained in questioning that is Scotland were to play England at any sport he would support England.

This is not the greatest crime in the world (at least not in most peoples books) but it does demonstrate a some what astonishing naivety in the ‘cultural gradient’.

In case you didn’t realise here are some points of clarification.

The Scotsman's greatest adversary is the English.

The Englishman’s greatest adversary is the German.

The German’s greatest adversary is the Dutchman.

The Dutchman’s greatest adversary is the Belgium.

The Belgium doesn’t have an adversary!

If Richard Leonard had heard his prime minister say that he would be supporting Germany if they played against England he would have been horrified and would not of understood the clanger that had just been dropped.

It is no problem for any leader of any political party to support any football rugby or any other team, but it might just point to a serious error of judgment in putting yourself forward for the post in the first place.

Not because you’re not allowed to support a football team but because you probably just alienated 50% of your party public by telling the truth in a quick question and answer session.

Best to understand the environment that you work in before you apply for the job.
