Coaching myself

“Your fitness is your responsibility. I cannot make you fit, I can only tell you that it is necessary that you are fit for when the season starts.”

So was the chat at the end of the Mustangs training session on Sunday night as 10 boys (some of them quite a lot larger than they were at the start of lockdown) finished their second lap of the pitch at the end.

We moved under 13’s football and 11 a side’s on a big pitch in September and I was trying to explain to the boys that I cannot do the running for them (even if I wanted to because I am somewhat of a cripple) and that they have to do it themselves in between the training sessions and not just at the training sessions.

Of course, and as it always is with all of these things I was actually talking to myself.

No one is going to make me better at my job, no one is going to make me better at being a father or a husband.

Certainly no one is going to make me fitter.

That responsibility falls to me and I can take it or I can leave it but what I must not do is leave it and then complain that I have not done it.

The first stage to getting better at anything is to start to try to be better at it and then take things from there.
