CBCT (practice makes perfect)

I’m sure you can imagine we looked on with interest when the GDC published their new guidance for CPD providers and how that may or may not affect us at The Campbell Academy and the way we deliver courses.

In the end we were absolutely delighted with the guidance that was produced and the new and increasing rigger that CPD providers will have to take into account and provide in courses for the benefit of delegates and ultimately for the end user – the patient.

One of the big things in the CPD provider’s guidance is quality assurance and demonstration of quality assurance as an organisation.

We’ve built this into the fabric of the TCA DNA from the very outset and we have a rigorous process of debriefing courses in conjunction with delegate feedback and presenter feedback in order to improve them the next time they’re presented.

One of the courses that has benefited most from this has been the CBCT Master class course which initially developed following a single conversation with Michael Bornstein, formally of University of Bern, now professor of University of Hong Kong and a world authority in CBCT who explained to me what he felt the best CBCT course would look like.

It is one thing to teach dentists to be able to anatomically report CBCTs. It is another to encourage them to report them anatomically and functionally (in relation to the procedure that they intend to carry out if that is indeed the case) but also to be able to interpret CBCTs for the greatest benefit to the patient and also prove, following teaching, that they’re able to do that.

The programme for the Master class in CBCT runs over 3 days, 2 initial days followed by a gap over summer and a final day to tie everything up and declare everyone on the course competent in CBCT reporting.

The course itself is centred around our own CBCT reporting format that has been developed over the past few years. The first two days are presented by myself and Michael Bornstein combining almost 25 years of CBCT experience.

I provide much of the functional CBCT reporting and Michael, the radiological CBCT reporting and reporting in relation to dental medicine, together with the explanation of the rational of a CBCT reporting form and an introduction of cases to be reported upon as ‘homework’.

This course provides all delegate with 20 CBCTs of differing formats and differing circumstances for reporting at home and sending back to TCA for marking.

The third day, which happens after the break over the summer, is present by Andy and Taimoor Kamran. Andy gives his own unique perspective from a self confessed technofile who has an understanding of almost every single digital platform on the market and Taimoor who has been involved in guided surgery from the very earliest of stages.

We also review the 20 CBCTs which have been marked to sign people off for huge amount of CBCT CPD but more than that an ability to report images which are not only medically safe but also functionally extremely useful for the practice going forwards.

To receive a CBCT report that is functionally reported is to be negligent.

As with all our courses we restrict the numbers on the CBCT course for greater delegate interaction. These are the dates if you’re interested – 7th to 8th June 2018 and 5th October 2018.
