Brilliant doesn’t last long

Years ago now (I forget when) we designed a box for treatment plans in the practice. It was one of the coolest things I had ever seen.

It’s been touted around the country by various different people, Chris Barrow has been kind enough to show it off at various events and conferences that he does to show what we did and try and encourage other people to do the same.

It worked, we counted it, it cost £10 every time we sent out a treatment plan and it converted hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of work.

It’s done now though and it has become ‘normal’, it was brilliant once and now it is just ‘common’.

The things that will come next in the presentation of treatment planning to patients, description of surgeries and consent will be remarkable and outstanding. Some of it may even come from us. But as with all these things you can’t coast at brilliant, it takes another huge super human effort to push it past the line again.

If you work somewhere that is trying to be the cheapest, trying to ship the most then that is ok because you don’t have to be brilliant, you have to be cheap.

If you’re at the other end though brilliance is the only way, but here is the thing… it frustrates you and it breaks your heart, it’s hard to maintain and it’s tiring but it is all worth it. It just doesn’t last for long (the funny thing is, happiness is the same).
