Boxer the horse

In George Orwell’s Animal Farm, one of the main and most interesting characters (in my eyes at least) is Boxer.

My daughter is currently studying Animal Farm for her GCSE English and I did the same, so it’s fascinating to me.

Boxer’s motto is “I must work harder” Boxer exploits no one and helps everyone.

He is the strongest and will work the longest and the hardest.

He gets the things done that other people will not get done and he believes what the master says.

In the end, when he dies, he is tossed aside.

And they move onto the next Boxer.

Proper selfishness is a horrible balance to strike but it is essential to try.

There is only so long you can go and flog yourself to death before you will die, and they will step over you to get to the next one.

They will say nice things about you for a little while, but you will soon be forgotten as everybody else gets back to the hamster wheel.

You are no use to anyone else if you are no use to yourself.
