This will be the winter of your discontent.
For a lot of people it looks like it’s going to be deep and dark for various reasons and differing reasons in different households.
Maybe it’s time we got off Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime or Apple TV where we sit facing one direction, consuming the shit that someone else wants us to consume without talking to each other.
I’m going to make a commitment just to do more, all those games that are in my house that we never get out of the box and so here are a few suggestions for you in case you want to get to board games in the winter.
Think of a dark winters night, it’s raining outside and you’re in the living room with your family, laughing and joking and competing against each other.
- Pass the pigs
Get these on Amazon or wherever you can get them, this is the simplest and most extraordinary competitive game, rolling little rubber pigs to see which way they land. This was introduced to me by my friend Phil while we were on holiday.
- Dobble
Definitely a life skill this, it’s so frustrating because so many times you can’t see the second icon. Suitable for everybody of all ages.
- Exploding Kittens
Brilliant, the game my eldest daughter played all the way through sixth form. Utterly brutal when you get the hang of it.
All of these you can carry in a bag.
- Cards against humanity (over 18s only)
Truly brutal, absolutely not politically correct and not for the woke.
- Perudo
This is a game from the Far East with dice. Really, really tactical and utterly brilliant but definitely fine for my 12 year old to play.
- Obama Llama
(Yes that is actually the name of the game, you may have seen it before) massively great fun for everybody, it goes on for ages.
- Linkee
Another really, really good game involving cards and dice. A good one-two hours of fun and games with Linkee.
And finally and obviously last but certainly not least, always Monopoly that lasts for days, some of those can run for a week or two in my house and we’ve got one running at the moment.
Honestly, it’s so easy to turn the TV on for all of us but try not turning it on one Saturday night and play pass the pigs.
