A visit to see war horse at the New London Theatre, Drury Lane

For my 40th birthday in January 2012 my wife gave me an IOU slip and promised to take me to the theatre to see the much acclaimed ‘War Horse’

Such is our life that it took me until the 5th January (the day before my birthday 2013) to actually get to see it with Alison but it was worth the wait.

The original book was written by Michael Morpurgo and my ten year old daughter has read most of his books. I also took her to Nottingham to see Michael Morpurgo do a reading of the book so I was familiar with the story before we got to the theatre. The real spectacle is the puppet element of the theatre with life size horse puppets controlled by 3 individuals at once. This is like nothing else I have ever seen in my life and I am so pleased that I was given the chance to see it before it stops at the theatre and people only talk about great it was.

The subject matter is harsh and difficult but we should never forget. I am strangely drawn to the first World War as I know of relatives of Alison’s who were involved and it was such an horrendous thing but it should never be forgotten.

Everyone should try and go and see War Horse at least to try and keep that alive.

If you do get the opportunity to see this, you must go. It will be like nothing you have seen before and it is unforgettable.
