The Tinkerbell Syndrome

I read about this in The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell.

I have heard before to describe the economy and money and certain things that we have made up that don’t actually exist but it is a great way to rationalise things.

In effect The Tinkerbell Syndrome means that lots of things don’t exist unless we believe in them. The economy is exactly like that: it is only there because we believe it and when we stop believing in it then it won’t be there anymore. It is a false thing that is manufactured, it never existed before and it won’t exist after. That is true of many things. It is possible to create something just because you believe it. If you believe it hard enough and the people around you believe it then the thing will exist, it is when you stop believing that it becomes a problem.

The mass of projects we have going at the moment at The Campbell Clinic and The Campbell Academy are only there because we believe it. We have five dental practices within a mile providing dental implants cheaper than us and I believe we are still the busiest. It’s because we believe in what we do and as long as we continue to believe in what we do then we will do it well. If we stop believing what we do then it won’t work anymore.
