I like to keep my New Year’s resolutions divided into personal, family and professional. For the moment I’ll perhaps keep the family ones to myself but I would like to share my personal and professional goals for 2012.
I have a stack of books split between the house and the practice probably twice as tall as me!
These are books which I have bought or been given that I am desperate to read and would love to find the time to sit down and read back to back until the pile is finished. I am fully aware though that there are millions of other books out there that I would love to read and that I will never, in my life, get through all the books that I want to. At a time like this when I am keen to read more to better myself I am overwhelmed with the amount of books that I have to read (this does not even include the audio books that I have on my iPhone and Mac)
So again at this time, the trick is to turn the first page of the first book and start somewhere.
I make a little list of the things I would like to do in the coming year. The personal list for 2012 looks like this:
- Read 12 of the books in ‘the pile’ (I read a blog post this time last year where someone was aiming to read 36 books in a year – completely impossible for me)
- See 12 films at the cinema this year – culminating in The Hobbit with my daughter Grace in December 2012 (a massive event for the pair of us) I love going to the cinema to see films and rarely get the chance
- Listen to 12 brand new artists albums this year that I have not listened to before – I love music and never seem to get the chance to listen to as much as I would like
- Complete and compete respectably in the events I have targeted to do as triathlon, duathlon or cycling this year. I am planning on approximately 5-6 events.
If I can nail these targets for myself and look back in December 2012 having achieved most of these I will be a very happy man.
