There is a theory in science about the probability of life on other planets and the conditions that would have to exist for similar life as is on ours to be present.
It's called 'The Goldilocks Theory'.
For life to exist similar to ours, water has to present and for water to be present the planet in question must be just the right temperature, not too hot, not too cold.
The Goldilocks Theory can of course be applied across many different things but to me, most importantly, the way we live our lives. It seems to me that most people are striving to hit their own goldilocks zone, particularly in relation to that old nugget of 'work / life balance'
Over stimulation at work is awful and infact is probably the most common thing people suffer from, this is stress, limited time, the limitation of the ability to do things well and crazy deadlines. It is clearly easy for this to reach an unmanageable stage and burn out.
Just as bad is under stimulation, lack of inspiration, lethargy, boredom and under utilisation of skills and talents. So we all go ahead designing our lives, consciously or unconsciously to try and hit the goldilocks zone.
So in my life, when I go too far towards the relaxation end of the spectrum I get fed up, less motivated and lazy but on the other hand, when I am in the goldilocks zone and things are going really well I get a feeling of invincibility, I say yes to everything and I travel right through the goldilocks zone into over stimulation.
I suspect the two secrets of remaining in and around the goldilocks zone are as follows:
1. The ability to say no
2. The ability to ritualise your life
Both of which I am extremely bad at. You can't take account of the things that blow you out of the goldilocks zone that are out of your control but it is possible to learn to stay in it longer.
This is probably where all your best work gets done.
