The futility of winning

'There isn't enough winning for winning to be the point' Chris Hoy

It has been a very long time since I have won at anything.

When I played basketball as a boy my school was very good and we won almost everything but I was in the Scottish cup final on two occasions and we lost both, one by two points (my fault) that was the biggest prize and we never won it.

I was the Captain of the Scottish basketball team and we never won anything, in fact we won very few games. They were a joy when they happened but we lost more than we won.

As far as Triathlon is concerned, I am nowhere near winning anything: not my age group, not the race, often not even the race against myself so it was a real inspiring moment to read the quote above in Michael Hutchinson's book about cycling.

Again I return to a quote I have used before: 'It's the happiness in the pursuit, not the pursuit of happiness'

It has taken me ages to develop the mindset that the process for me is as or more important than winning.

Don't get me wrong, at the start of every race I dream about some exceptional performance which takes me to a place I have never been before and often when I finish it does feel like I have won, but it can't be at the expense of the journey to get there. The journey to get there is the most important bit.
