Daniel Thoma Master Class Part One: a day of exceptional teaching

Following on from what is now becoming customary at The Campbell Academy, we invited another expert from Europe to provide a Master Class for select clinicians to tie in with an ITI Study Club.

On recommendation we invited Dr Daniel Thoma from the University of Zurich to attend to discuss Guided Bone Regeneration and Soft Tissue Regeneration for a Master Class for a small, select group of dentists at The Campbell Academy’s usual venue; The Riverbank on 3rd June 2015.

Daniel came recommended from his boss at the University of Zurich, Christoph Hammerle, as someone who was well versed in current research into Guided Bone Regeneration and Soft Tissue Regeneration and would be able to give us a pointer in the right direction for all of these procedures.

This was an exceptional day and, as always at the Master Class, provoked some fantastic discussions amongst the small group of clinicians present to become some of the best peer review CPD you are ever likely to get.

We generally start the day with a whiteboard and write what everybody would like to know, or things that we would like to discuss before the end of the day. We then let Daniel free to discuss his various topics including Guided Bone Regeneration including the studies on whether GBR in upper anterior cases is necessary or not and in which circumstances it can be used and where it can be left alone. Different types of implants, different types of bone loss associated with different types of implants and some very subtle changes to how you might practice implant dentistry to gain some marginal benefits were discussed. On discussing Soft Tissue Regeneration we discussed connective tissue grafts and future alternatives to harvesting connective tissue grafts from the palate. We also discussed the options of free gingival grafting but also the use of some proprietary and generic materials for free gingival grafting without harvesting from donor sites. More importantly all of this was backed up with the latest evidence and systematic reviews and comparative papers were at the forefront and the highest level of evidence discussion was undertaken.

It is rare that I attend all day CPD sessions which actually change my practice dramatically but there is no question that the Daniel Thoma Master Class and ITI Study Club did exactly that. The day was tied in expertly with the ITI Study Club in the evening which I will discuss in part two of these blogs.
