Carl Dunstan (the super physio) calls it ‘the champagne moment’ when he gives someone exercises to do that change their neuromuscular pattern and finally they get it.
I have close experience with this from a bad injury to my shoulder when I finally realised what he was trying to get me to do and my shoulder started to get better.
What makes things better are champagne moments when you get it!!
The other day I had 2.
1. When Neil Poyser, our Consultant Restorative Dentist, in our meeting to try and improve our patient assessment for implants said “your case notes aren’t good enough, the template doesn’t get filled in properly and it looks as though you have left things out. If anyone from the law read that you would be stuffed” It was a champagne moment, he was able to tell me what was wrong. I look at it and said “you’re right” we changed it and the practice got better.
2. Later on in the day we were having a management meeting at the other practice when my practice manager Jo said “this member of staff really likes doing Excel….” Massive champagne moment. Chatting to the member of staff in question it turns out that her mother and her husband are accountants and she loves ‘playing about with formulas’ She told me today that she can’t do the complex stuff but she can do easy stuff. I told her that her easy formulas are more complex than any formula I have ever seen. It may just be that we have found another Excel wizard within the business and they are truly priceless.
The more champagne moments the better and at the moment there seems to be one or two every day. That’s what makes us better.
