The Campbell Academy Review – Occlusion Master Class and implant complete and partial dentures with Charlotte Stilwell

On 6th October it was fantastic to welcome Charlotte Stilwell to The Campbell Academy to provide one of our, now regular, Master Classes.

I have known Charlotte since 2007 when we lectured together in Gatwick and I’ve been intimidated by her ever since! She’s a great friend and a truly exceptional clinician and thinker in dentistry.

She is a genuine Harley Street practitioner, practising four long days in a Harley Street clinic for the last 21 years. Here understanding of occlusion and dentures is better than anyone I have ever seen.

Charlotte also lectures 2 days per month at the University of Geneva with Frauke Muller and Irena Sailer, 2 of the best-known clinicians in the ITI worldwide.

The day was exceptional - we started as we usually do with TCA courses with a whiteboard exercise asking what people wanted to know by the time they left and Charlotte ticked off every box. She started with concepts that seemed ludicrously simple (I have seen this so many times before) to build up in a pyramid towards the more complex areas of occlusion and occlusion in implant dentistry that she knows so well.

There was a face bow practical exercise where everyone had the chance to work on brand new Denar articulators and facebows and tons and tons of discussion.

There was a break from 4:00pm – 6:30pm where we had something to eat and prepared for the ITI Study Club in the evening which was based on partial and complete dentures in relation to implant dentistry.

If you didn’t think this was the future of implant dentistry, if you didn’t think gerodontology and treatment of the geriatric patient was the future of implant dentistry then where have you been and what have you been thinking? This is the area of most importance for the next 20 – 30 years in our area of the profession.

The feedback was universally exceptional. A great group of people who were very interactive and interested to learn and improve for their patients.

I was asked several times if I could ask Charlotte to expand the course next year to two days – people want to go into even more depth in occlusion with Charlotte and want to be able to pick her brains for more subjects. They wanted to discuss splints and have longer discussing articulation and facebow registration. They also wanted longer to discuss about whether to conform or to organise all the areas related to this.

A little rallying call - we are too busy at The Campbell Academy to be honest to put in another Master Class for next year but if there is enough interest in this then I will try and convince Charlotte to come back for a 2-day course covering occlusion in implant dentistry to a programme designed by her.

We’d need 15 people and the likelihood is that it would be £1000 - £1200 per person.

If you’re interested please email me: colin@campbell-clinic.co.uk and if it seems to be a reasonable proposition then we’ll put it in the diary for next year.
