I do love going to coffee shops, something that my wife absolutely hates as eh doesn’t see the point in the expense.
I have always been a fan of Starbucks from the early days and the whole Starbucks atmosphere and then thought that Costa really did this very well from a British standpoint and got really successful at it.
I love the whole sitting having a coffee thing, reading the paper or hooked into the Wifi doing some work – infact once a week Marie, my PA and I usually meet at a Starbucks to catch up with everything for an hour and it works really well.
So why was I annoyed when I walked into the local co-op the other day, past a huge Costa cup at the entrance to a Costa Express machine. I immediately though that Costa were too big and it started to annoy me. I think it might have something to do with the fact that there is a line over which organisations cross with me where I feel I am not getting value for money or I am getting “ripped”.
Perhaps the Costa Express machines are just a symptom of the country’s now huge addiction to caffeine that it never had before the coffee shops came but we have to be careful not to get too big or get to the point where we just grow and expand for expansions sake and miss the point of why we were good in the first place.
I think it is called “unbridled pursuit of more” and I think when I walked into the Co-Op, Costa crossed that line.
