Robbie Williams
Take the Crown
When I started out on the journey of 12 for 2012 with films, albums and books I didn’t think for a minute I would be uncool enough to blog about a Robbie Williams album to everybody else.
The choice at the end was Robbie Williams or Mumford and Sons but I have already done a Mumford and Sons album this year and infact, the Robbie Williams tale is worth telling.
I started listening to this album because my wife and I got tickets to see him at the O2 arena (Alison has been a long-term fan of Robbie and has seen hi on many occasions) and as we were travelling to the O2 I suddenly realised I had seen him before as Alison and I had travelled to Dublin with some friends one year to see him at Croke Park.
On the morning of the O2 gig I decided to look at some reviews from the show the night before and found myself reading someone’s interpretation of the ‘Robbie Williams comeback’. It seems that very few huge scale musicians and celebrities who actually actively give up main stream fame as Robbie Williams did manage to get it back when they realise they have made the wrong choice.
Take the Crown went straight to Number 1. The single Candy went straight to Number 1 and the O2 was full 3 nights in a row and was absolutely mental.
We saw the gig and I am happy to say I was absolutely fabulous.
When we recently saw Ed Sheeran, he started his show by saying “if you think you’re too cool to sing along you have come to the wrong gig” and that certainly applies in the Robbie Williams show.
I have been lucky to have seen lots and lots of gigs and festivals with my wife but I have rarely ever seen anybody who can command an audience like this man.
The album itself is pretty good, the first 2 singles have been written by Robbie and Gary Barlow and Gary was on stage at the gig for those songs. The last song on the album, which is a duet is classic, thoughtful Robbie Williams lyrics.
When you actually stop and listen to the lyrics of some of his better songs they are actually some pretty good examples of modern day poetry with his self confessed personality defects and his huge low self esteem issues. I seem to be able to relate to the man in one way or another and his album is actually pretty good.
