Black Monday

Let’s not do that one again.

I thought it was just me, I was at little bit of a low ebb on Monday and Tuesday of this week, but it turns out it was almost everybody else that I know.

Week six of lockdown was when it started to hit home and hit hard.

Most of the people in the UK who’s stuff that I read were feeling the same thing.

Unconsciously I think most people thought it would be over by now.

As we woke up to the fact that the UK was one of the worst affected areas in Europe for COVID-19 and the statistics of nursing homes were starting to be revealed, we looked with envy at Denmark and Switzerland and even Spain opening up faster than us.

As Dentist's we looked abroad to places like Hong Kong and Switzerland and Australia who seem to be getting on with their life faster than we were getting on with ours.

And then many of us stopped and realised that this sort of thinking isn’t going cure anything and isn’t going to make anything any better.

The dips are inevitable, but the story that we tell ourselves at the bottom at the dip are ultimately the things that will get us to the other side and to a better place (whatever better place might mean).

We will live in this purple haze of thinking that before the COVID-19 epidemic we could buy whatever we wanted and after the COVID epidemic our ability to do that might reduce while forgetting the most important thing is “what we wanted”.

Nothing changed between Sunday and Monday, in fact nothing changed between two weeks ago on Sunday and this Monday except the story that we told ourselves and the narrative we wrote in our own personal diary.

The way out of this has always been the same and will always be the same.

Prepare for what comes next and expect that it will be different.

For ages I’ve written about creativity and resilience, sometimes in exactly those words and sometimes in other forms.

It’s time for me to show up with creativity and with resilience, it’s time for me to hope my family have the same and also that my business is imbibed with the same spirit.

Maybe it will or maybe it won’t, but the guys who win (not win because there is no winning), the guys that make it to the other side sane, healthy, satisfied, inspired and relieved.

They are the ones who create and resist.

Worth remembering also that in the words of the Baz Luhrmann song "The race is long and in the end, it’s only with yourself”.
