Arbitrary numbers

At the start of our year-long business course 10 days ago we started to investigate things that people count within their practice and why they might do that.

It brought to our attention (again) the concept of arbitrary numbers.

Most of us live a life where some of the necessary numbers that we have, the things which could make us better if we really knew the answer, are arbitrary and laced with emotion.

How much profit is your business supposed to make?

How much money are you supposed to get paid?

What percentage of your turnover should be allocated to your team?

Most of these numbers in most businesses I’ve ever come across are arbitrary.

In times of a crisis (and we might be heading towards one of those) objective numbers trump arbitrary numbers every time.

When the going gets tough the emotions get rough but objective non arbitrary numbers never tell a lie, they guide and steer and help us through the choppy waters.
