A simple trick

Some years ago, we ran our version of a TED conference a couple of times at The Academy (really should get that going again).

I did a lecture called ‘The Time Machine’.

It was a discussion about how I use the Olympus DS-2400 digital voice recorder to record things that I would otherwise have to type to save time and allow me to do other things.

As I dictate this, I’m about to go on holiday and I’m in that mad situation of trying to get things done.

Because it’s a bank holiday and the jubilee I needed to produce 15 blogs before I went (I’ve explained tons of times on here how the blog is produced).

It takes an extraordinary amount of time to put together 15 blogs and super, Millie Somerfield, who does that as my blog editor at the practice does an amazing job and makes it look beautiful and generally sources images and puts them in.

So, I just have to speak the blogs and out they go, and it creates the most extraordinary conversation.

In this mad rush to get things finished I also needed to produce letters for 23 patients and had 3 separate inboxes full of emails that I hadn’t got to for about a week including governor work, clinical work and personal stuff, all of which were completed in a couple of hours in the shed at the back of the garden with the help of the DS-2400.

Obviously, you dictate into the machine and then you ask someone else to type it.

You take the SD card out, put it in your Mac and send it to the person who’s typing it and it’s out your mind and out of your head and you’re onto something else.

Generally, when I tell this story people tell me that I should use Dragon, the dictation software, but I’ve tried that and there is no humane aspect, no sense check, no help.

The other thing about using the DS-2400 is it gives you the opportunity to pay someone else to do it and to ‘share the wealth’ and to build a team and to work with other human beings.

Digital technology is not about making you less human, it’s about making you more human and I can contact many, many more people than I would ever be able to do because I delegate using the time machine.
