In general terms artists tend to celebrate other artists successes.
This is because there’s almost no limit to art and there’s enough people who buy it to ensure that anyone who’s good at it can probably make a living doing it.
Dentistry is different to that.
Few people in dentistry seem to have the growth mindset to celebrate the successes of other people in their sphere.
They tend to think ‘that should have been me’.
I think the opposite is true if we’re keen to build organisations that are stronger and better.
I think our first role should be to enable other people to achieve brilliance and to take great pride and pleasure when that happens to people who work in your profession for the benefit of patients.
Dentistry is a tiny group of people who are, supposedly, all pulling in the same direction for the same cause.
Why then do we find it so hard to celebrate it, to celebrate when one of our own makes a positive change or creates a positive influence.
Perhaps if we can look at ourselves a little bit harder, we could see that if we worked together a little bit better then everybody would win a little bit more.
