30. All Wretch and no Vomit - published 26.10.2013

This blog was first posted in October 2013.

I have a friend in Scotland who is a dentist running his own practice who asked me once "when do you get that Sunday night feeling before work?"

I said "sometimes on a Sunday night after holiday, why when do you get it?"

"Saturday morning" he replied "every week"

Situations like this must be a catalyst for changing something in your life.

When the pressure gets on these days I sometimes find myself thinking about stuff at work throughout the weekend, I promise myself that come Sunday night I will sit down for an hour or so, make sure my emails are answered, plan the week ahead, worry in advance for any issues that might come up (anticipated stress) but in the end I generally don't because Alison doesn't let me! I get too caught up in the busy stuff with the family and if i'm lucky I answer a couple of emails or take a phone call when i'm walking the dog at 9pm on a Sunday night.

The reason I am trying harder and harder to avoid this is because it really is all wretch and no vomit. It's working hard throughout the weekend to prepare yourself and allow yourself to work really hard throughout the week so that you can get to the end of the week to leave a bit of work to do over the weekend so you are ready to start the week again the next week!

That is all well and good if you love that and you really want to do that but your work exists to give you the life you choose and, while I genuinely love my work, I want to try really hard to stop it distracting me from my family.
