David qualified from the University of Dundee in 1984 and was soon the principal of a small practice in Lincolnshire. After a few years he kick-started his postgraduate interests completing a number of diploma courses and following being selected as a Foundation Dentist Educational Supervisor in 2000 he became a Training Programme Director in Yorkshire Deanery.
The experience of running a practice without delegation and the skills associated with a Deanery Adviser led to a diverse knowledge including leadership, interviewing skills, practice management, practice inspections, and mentoring.
At the same time, David was a member of the British and European Endodontic Society and was selected by the FGDP to visit Maillefer as part of the introduction of Protaper. As his confidence in endodontics grew, he accepted referrals from local practices until he became a full-time dentolegal consultant with Dental Protection in 2015, for whom he had been working part-time for a number of years previously.
In the role of a Dentolegal Consultant, David took telephone calls and gave advice regarding all aspects of dentistry. He also managed complaints, solicitors claims, and GDC related cases. It is the knowledge gained from this aspect of his career he wishes to share with the delegates.
