Ever since I started providing education in implant dentistry, I had a clear view of what I felt education should be like to take general practitioners from a standing start in education to complex implant treatments.
It's taken a long time to get to where I think we should be because we had to build a jigsaw puzzle piece by piece, starting with straightforward implant dentistry and everything to do with that (our Year Implant Course and ITI foundation level certificate) and moving on to advanced implant dentistry, including GBR and aesthetic implant dentistry (Our Year two implant course and intermediate ITI certificate).
For the first time, I'm delighted to let you know that we have completed a year's worth of development to begin the process of taking delegates into our Year Three Implant Course (complex implant dentistry and preparation for the ITI diploma - a world-class, world-renowned implant qualification).
And so, in this three-part series of blogs, I would like to explain what's involved in the year three course in case this is something you would like to work towards or in case it's something that you feel may be applicable to take your implant dentistry on to the next level from here!
We've always been very clear about our courses that they should consist of lecture-based elements and the transfer of theoretical content in the best possible way.
They should also contain innovative online discussions, peer-to-peer learning formats (our Slack channels, which are now famous or infamous), practical teaching and education in the classroom style and live surgery aspects.
The Year Three Implant Course encompasses all of these but also some new, innovative ways to provide education that we have yet to see properly before.
The course begins in December when we get together online (complex implant circles only need to be travelling to courses some of the time).
We will provide a designated Slack channel as we do for our other courses, but this will be different in the depth of content and complexity it possesses.
Each month where there is no contact teaching on The Year Three Implant Course, we will release a complex case throughout the first week of the month to stimulate discussion, introspection and thought around how to deal with complex cases, either in the nature of their treatment or their complication or their patient management.
Each month, the Slack channel will be coached by a specific experienced clinician to be able to mentor delegates through their own cases at that time (which can be posted on Slack) or to mentor delegates through the cases that are produced to provoke discussion.
This means that we will build up a volume of complex case discussions on the Slack channel, which is moderated and unlike any other digital channel you are likely to see.
Among this, you will be able to have your cases mentored and discussed both with the group and with the coach in charge that month.
Moving on from this, you will have full access to our world-class master class series, which will be unveiled later this year.
This will consist of a world-class restorative master class in January from the University of Geneva clinicians and technicians (Irena Sailer and Vincent Fehmer).
There will be a world-class master class from the University of Zurich through Rony Jung, providing work on anterior aesthetic implant dentistry, case planning and ridge preservation.
There will be a soft tissue master class from Daniele Cardaropoli of Turin discussing aspects of soft tissue management in both planning and application.
Around these three world-class master classes will be access to other master classes and courses through The Campbell Academy portfolio and also preparation for the ITI diploma, a summative assessment which involves the production of eight cases to be submitted, followed by an oral exam through four blind cases and other aspects of implant dentistry.
In this first year of our Year Three Implant Course, Andy and I pledged to enrol for the ITI Diploma with our delegates.
The value of the individual course attendance for The Year Three Implant Course way outstrips the cost of the course itself without the coached Slack learning and the peer-to-peer learning and the case content material, and the coaching for the ITI diploma.
We believe this is a course, an educational experience, that will prepare clinicians for complex implant dentistry in a way which is hard to find elsewhere when people dot and dab at different courses and different areas of implant dentistry as the will takes them.
This marks the opening of our fellowship in implant dentistry at The Campbell Academy. If you'd like to take the next step towards complex implant dentistry in a totally supported way and with a group of like-minded peers travelling in the same direction, then we would encourage you to look at this.
It's also worth remembering that if you embark on the three-year implant training pathway at The Campbell Academy, you can stop and start as your life takes you within five years, completing year one and taking a break or completing years one and two together before taking a break and returning back for your complex dentistry education at a later stage.
There is a weighted discount through the whole of the three years for people who decide to take on the three years together, and we look forward to discussing that with anyone who might be interested.
For us, this is a watershed moment in the provision of our education.
It's taken us to the level that I always wanted to be at, from a standing start at straightforward implant dentistry to the other end of complex as a colleague, friend, and collaborator.
