Three years from now

I have just finished overseeing and delivering The Campbell Academy’s Aesthetic Live Skills Course for 2018. It’s the fourth time we have run this course and it’s now heading into the 12th year of running Live Skills Courses in total for me.

I watched someone today place an implant in an upper left central incisor site – pretty much perfectly.

The position was perfect and they provided an ‘inside outside’ GBR procedure having assessed the situation and adapted well.

The soft tissue management was exceptional and the closure was fantastic. The re-provisionalisation was about perfect.

Our practice will restore this case and it will be an exceptional aesthetic restoration.

Three years ago the same individual attended the same course, put their hands up half way through surgery and decided not to continue because it was too complex, knowing that their skill level wasn’t at the situation they wanted to provide the care for the patient. The case was completed by the demonstrator in surgery at that time who was Colin Burns.

There is nothing quite like watching someone reach their potential after hard work and dedication and that’s what happened today. Not just for this individual but for others that were there too.

It’s a five-year process to get anywhere near good enough and this person is three years into that process with us and has come on such a long way.

Where will you be in three years and what’s the thing you’ll get better at?

That’s a question we should all ask ourselves. Not just on 1stJanuary as our hangover wears off, but at some specific point during the year when we’ve decided we’re going to pay attention and focus on the longer term and not the shorter term.

It’s hard as I sit here in my practice, trying to put something on Facebook for the academy and then being drawn to other people’s pictures and being sucked into a world of FOMO and thinking that I’m falling behind or not producing anything good.

Everybody that left the course today (and the one person who couldn’t make the last day) will place 50 – 100 implants a year and what they’ve taken from us will filter through those implant placements.

That’s 400 – 800 implants per year going in year on year on year that we’ve played a part in, patients that we have influenced or affected the care of in a positive way.

In three years’ time we will be doing that better and sending the message stronger. We will be sticking to our guns more firmly and working in a facility that is earth shatteringly good.

But remember this… I said this years ago and I’ll say it again…

If more people turn up, we’ll put out more seats and if less people turn up then we’ll take some seats away but we’ll still do the same thing because it is the right thing, regardless of what it looks like anywhere else.
