Things to think about for your Christmas

As we break up for Christmas time and have the space in our lives to think about what comes next and how much we like our families or don't like them and what we want to do with ourselves, it would be worth investigating just very briefly, the concept of GPT-3 (not to be mistaken with GTA-3).

GPT-3 is a new artificial intelligence linguistic engine, which has been released quite recently onto the market but developed over years.

It’s following on from some of the massive advances in AI that have broken through in video and photography and various other aspects of our Internet and technical lives.

The thing about GPT-3 is that it will listen to your voice, allow you to frame a question and then produce whatever you want in response to the question that you've asked. Just to give you an example within about 30 seconds, it can write you a 2000-word essay on what GPT-3 is and what the function of it is.

It will happily write you an essay about the meaning of life, which you could probably submit as a project for your philosophy degree at any decent university.

It can tell you about DNA and the functions of DNA and how it’s produced within the body.

It can pretty much answer any question to the level of a very, very, very good sixth form student or perhaps an average university student.

It's not lost on me, either the fact that now my blogs have changed this year and are dictated in our slack software platform that we use at the Clinic.

What happens in Slack is that I dictate the blog into my phone, and it transcribes it immediately (admittedly getting quite a lot wrong) but it allows Millie to take the text, drop it in and edit it based on the audio in less time and post it.

Everything is changing quicker than we can possibly imagine.

Back to GPT-3, though, and imagine what that's going to do to conventional education because it will be impossible to tell whether something's been GPT-3’d and it can give you any number of variations of projects based on the questions that you ask it.

So, why would we bother asking our six form students to produce written work again if they can just do it on GPT-3?

And if that is the case, what should we teach them? Because everything else is accessible just by asking GPT-3 a question.

Learning will truly be different and is moving on as fast as possible.

All of this stuff is coming your way, I guess it's just a matter of time and I guess the decision is whether you can hang on as long as possible with the ‘old ways’ or whether you can't hang on because you have too long to go and it's time to embrace the future.

Either way, I wish you all the very best for 2023 but worth remembering that at the start of 22 I was still dictating my blog into an old-fashioned analogue Dictaphone with AAA batteries, and now I probably will never do that again.
