The Five-Year Growth Cycle

I had a phone call today, one of those crazy car phone calls after I had rushed to drop my daughter off at her singing lesson and was rushing back to the house to finally pack my bag to go away on a ‘work trip’.

I’ve been trying to get hold of this person for a while so we can have a chat about the possibility of support for a research project at the practice.

About 5 years ago I had similar conversations with Straumann and Geistlich to see if they wanted to support a prospective trial of contoured guided bone regeneration for upper front teeth implants.

They did, and we did it, and it’s now at five years and we have the data. We should be putting something out there pretty quickly regarding this.

It worked by the way, and it works in practice.

The call today was to see if we wanted to do it again, but take it up a level. Try to prove something else, but there won’t be any fruit from this tree for 5 years.

In the mist of the madness, of packing my bag, leaving my son who was grabbing onto me not wanting me to leave and all the other things that go on, in the mist of it all we have to think about the 5 years to come.

Five years ago, we didn’t have a Campbell Academy, and we didn’t have an Aesthetic Course or any objective data to say that doing the thing the way we did at the front of the mouth actually worked. Nothing apart from intuition.

Since then we proved that it works and we teach people on an Aesthetic Course in an Academy set up to show that it does.

The Aesthetic Course runs in November and is full this year. It’s ¾ full for the year after, not because we ‘show boat’ but because 5 years ago we decided to try to prove what works in a private practice in a sleepy corner of England so that you can transfer it to your practice in your sleepy corner of wherever.

We’re not teaching people at university to be at university researching and flying high, we’re trying to teach people on the ground systems that work for their patients that are predictable and long term which you can rely on.

If you’re not basing it as much as you can on objective evidence then it’s just a big stream of p*ss in the wind, hoping that some of it might land in the right place.
