Learning to swim

If you’re unfortunate enough to fall off a boat but then fortunate enough to be able to swim to the shore to save your life, does your thought automatically turn to the person who taught you to swim?

Do you feel the urge to seek them out and thank them for saving your life or do you congratulate yourself on your strength and your ability?

The value of our education and those who provided it for us is one of the things which is most massively underestimated in society and in everything we do.

Phillip Hollows taught me how to be a Surgeon by teaching me how to be a Physician first.

John Gibson taught me how to consult with patients and how to be empathic in a consultation but more importantly than that how to advocate for patients who were vulnerable.

Sheila Fisher told me how not to be a boss, in fact many people taught me that.

It rare that I go back to John or to Phil and thank them for what they did for me, skills that I use every single day of my working life.

In the same way we take care to gain our education, our knowledge and our learning from people whom we actually value and from whom we feel we want to learn and emulate.

Consideration of the time that you spend on your education is so important now because so much is free and available but money is often not the object, it’s the time that you have available to invest that becomes the issue.

There are several things in the pipe line for The Campbell Academy now which might be worth considering if you want to ‘learn how to swim’.

We’re opening up applications and entries for our Year Implant Course to start in early 2021.

For obvious reasons and for not so obvious reasons the numbers will be restricted and we have people keen to attend already (thankfully), if you want 2021 to be the year you start your Implant journey or reinvigorate it in a nurturing and empathic environment then perhaps have a look.

Sooner than that we’re launching the first edition of our Digital business course which is geared to provide you with an easy and accessible (and relatively short) introduction to writing your own business plan for the next 3 years.

The skills that you’re likely to learn on that course (and the relationships you’re likely to build) will probably influence you every single day for the rest of your working life but you will not turn round to the people and provided it and say thanks, you will just use it like you’re swimming to the shore.

Perhaps it’s time for us all to take our armbands off, dive in and learn to swim.
