I heard a few stories this week about people who were disappointed with their A-Level results and their GCSE results but they still managed to ‘get in’ to where they are going. Conventional education isn’t for everyone and one size certainly does not fit all. I can say that with some experience as I have now been a Governor in Primary and Secondary schools for nearly a decade.
The template education system that we have is ok as an average across the board but now days everybody has to seek out further stimulus in lots of specialised areas to try and differentiate them from the crowd and make themselves better. A-Levels and GCSE’s only count so far. Just for the record in 1989 I was admitted to Glasgow Dental School with the lowest qualifications from the higher grades in my year, I had minimum standard for entry into Dentistry. An A and three B’s at higher.
It worked out alright for me.
If my life had been measured on my higher grades for the rest of it I would have been decidedly mediocre. No body ‘just gets in’. They get in or they don’t. That after all is the point, once you’re in, your slate is clean; you get the chance to do it again.
Get in!
