How do you know you're smart?

Not all teachers are outstanding.

Without a doubt, not all dentists (or many dentists) are outstanding.

So, what do good teachers do to get to outstanding…

Firstly, they watch other teachers and secondly, they let other teachers watch them.

When was the last time you stood in a surgery with a colleague and watched the way they work?

When was the last time you asked a colleague to sit with you and comment on the way that you work?

This is some of the best continuing professional development you can possibly get and yet, we generally ignore this opportunity or pass it up as being worthless or useless.

That’s also one of the cheapest that you can get!!

I believe, we still live in a situation where the majority of dentists, work the majority of time on their own with a nurse in surgery, without anyone else looking.

I remember a blog by Seth Gordon from many years ago, where he suggested that if you wanted to get good at excel, then hire someone who’s brilliant at excel for an afternoon and ask them to watch you work and give you hints and tips. That is the best type of coaching and in early line of coaching can be respirable, so that it’s not even chargeable.

I’ll watch you at work, if you watch me at work, and let’s be honest with each other.

Wouldn’t that be a lovely thing to do?
