In case you’re just about to go on holiday or you have just been but still fancy picking up some books, here are some ideas you might like (or not)

  1. Suicide Club by Rachel Heng. My suggestion for Italy holiday book club and totally in keeping with the blog I wrote about what comes next. Really thought provoking read and ties in with the next two.
  2. Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari. If you haven’t read this book it’s a cracker for a holiday book. Big tome but amazingly well written and deserves its status as one of the best best-sellers. A great exploration of where life came from and where it is now, leading onto…
  3. Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari. A frightening, factual exploration of where the world might go from here on in and probably inspired 1000 new books on the future. If you’re interested in what the world might be like for your children or your children’s children then it’s very thought-provoking stuff.
  4. Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. A beautiful testimony to a genius man and surgeon’s father and an exploration of what it’s like for all of us to grow old.
  5. Anything by David Mitchell but particularly ‘The Bone Clocks’ especially if you know 1980s culture or ‘Cloud Atlas
  6. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. If you haven’t seen the movie (or even if you have but you haven’t read the book) this is a joy. Fast paced, fantastic and really entertaining. Brilliant holiday book.
  7. Open by Andre Agassi. This is the best sports autobiography ever written.
  8. It’s not what you think by Chris Evans. One of the best autobiographies ever written (IMHO)
  9. Notes from a small island by Bill Bryson. This will make you laugh out loud.
  10. The Five People you meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom. If you want to cry read this book. It’s amazing.
  11. Any of the books by Malcolm Gladwell but especially David and Goliath.
  12. Any of the books by Matthew Syed but especially Black Box Thinking.
  13. Any of the books by Dan Pink but especially A Whole New Mind for a Whole New World.
  14. Finally, if you’ve ever lost anyone and you’re sad or you think about them when you’re on holiday, read The Crow Road by Iain Banks. It helped me to make sense.

Final Note: Why not try to get the books from Wordery if you’re going to buy them and not Amazon? We all know we shouldn’t use Amazon but we all do. Get the books from Wordery instead.
