Enough already

The secret of having enough and the contentment that comes with that is the understanding that it's always possible to have more, but for what?

I remember speaking to a guy that I know who's got tonnes and tonnes of money, he'd gone to a jeweller's shop to collect a present for his wife that he'd ordered, and he offered him the chance to buy ‘another’ watch.

He bought it.

He said to me afterwards, ‘Where does it end in question?’

That's a pertinent question. The secret of enough is, well, having enough, even when other people might seem to have more or better or other.

I planned to travel to the World Cup this year to watch Scotland and Boston. I did the first game of the Euros (I did all three games of Scotland at the Euros) in Germany.

And so, my friend Colin Burns and I schemed and plotted and planned and organised with the help of Super Marie, my PA, the trip to Boston to see Scotland in the World Cup against Haiti.

It would have been quite the bender, quite the occasion.

Colin and I had a conversation on the phone today and decided that we had had enough.

What I'll do instead (which actually will probably be better) is meet my son Callum after his last A-level when he's been out with his friends. Bring my daughter Rosie, put on our Scotland shirts and watch them in a shed in Nottingham.

That is way more enough than the enough, and the extravagance and the excess of travelling to another continent, sometimes it's important that I'm honest with myself and talk harshly. Just because it's possible doesn't mean it's reasonable, or even brilliant.

Enough is definitely enough.
