Double counting

A two-way street this.

You can celebrate that you have won £100 on the lottery when you see your numbers come up on the television.

You can celebrate again when you find the ticket in your wallet and celebrate again when you go to the shop to collect the cash.

It’s still only £100.

On the other hand, you can bemoan the speeding fine time after time again (and many times after you’ve paid it) increasing the misery to a much greater degree than the problem deserves.

Double counting is the ultimate double-edged sword, inflate the good news, deflate the bad news.

Always better to look on the positive side but probably better to count things just the once.
