Business is built in stages

Initially, we start up and if we're lucky enough that things become more successful, we try to scale up until ultimately, we reach a situation where we're grown up.

One of the most important considerations through these phases is putting the right people into the right places, not so dissimilar to playing board games.

Initially, in the start-up phase, we're playing drafts (or checkers depending upon where you're reading this) simple game, small amount of playing pieces, all of the same style.

In that situation, we know we've won when one of our pieces reaches the right place and we get to add a new king (king me).

Once we get to that situation, we're in a position to start to scale up.

The scale-up phase though is more like chess and so, the pieces we're trying to add to the board in order to have enough to play are specific to their positions (there's no point in having a castle in the position of the queen).

Our job at the scale up phase is to fill the board to allow us to play with sophistication, to have the right pieces, in the right places, performing the right actions.

The move from scale-up to grown up, takes a considered decision, are we going to open multiple boards (grandmasters at chess play multiple board games at once, all the time) or are we going to extend the size of the board; having four or five of every piece to play a more complicated and sophisticated game but with ostensibly the same rules.

Understanding the stage that you're at and what is required of you is absolutely critical for success and the ability to move forwards.

There is no point in playing drafts while the other guy is playing chess (HT Rachel Turner - Chris Barrow's business coach and her book).
