My Sabbatical – part one

Colin Campbell
by Colin Campbell on 13/12/16 18:00

If you read these pages regularly you may be aware that it was my intention to take time off through January of 2017.

Amazingly the time is approaching and all the plans are still in place (not derailed as yet)

So… as from 20th December at 5:30pm I will, for all intents and purposes, be entirely off the grid.

This is therefore a message to my friends and dental work colleagues to know what to expect during that time. I will not return to work, except in the case of an extreme emergency (death or earthquake) until 9:30am on 6th February 2017.

During that time, super PA Marie will have charge of my high-tech iPhone 6 plus (with the cracked screen) and my MacBook air. She will have control of both my email accounts, gmail and Campbell Clinic. She will be in charge of answering any texts, emails or phone calls that come to those machines. She will not be forwarding me anything from those.

At home, email accounts will be taken off any devices I have. Facebook will be unavailable to me (it’s only ever available through safari on my phone and I don’t even have the app). Similarly, I will have no access to any social media site.

Over the next little while some very, very, very close friends will receive an email from me with the phone number of my pay as you go ‘brick’ phone where they can contact me for social and friendship reasons only. Anybody who tries to talk to me about dentistry during that time will be ex-communicated!!!

I’ll do a part two of this blog to explain what my plans are but as far as communication is concerned, the only thing I plan to do is to write the blog six days a week. It will be different as there will be no dentistry in it and I will write it specifically one day at a time every single day. I’ll write it myself and publish it myself – I’ll remove the responsibility to publish or edit the blog from Marie for that period of time (I’m sure she’s delighted!) The Sunday blogs will be published by Tom and Andy as they are the other parts of the academy and they can do what they like with it, I will try my best not to read it.

This has been a long time coming, over twenty five years, and I’m perhaps more excited about this than I have been about anything else for a very long time.

Those of you who are true friends who are unable to contact me during the time will entirely understand my requirement for some stillness and some solitude. Those of you who don’t understand were probably not my friends in the first place and were only pretending to be so it’s probably best that we understand that as we go forwards.

My team at the practice are immense and will be able to handle any eventuality on a professional basis, from advice regarding patients to anything to do with my schedule in 2017. They will be able to make any decisions that I would have made and take the credit for any triumphs and learn from any mistakes.

I have a few more work days to go but as of the 20th, Elvis…
