Inspiration and Bloodstream

Colin Campbell
by Colin Campbell on 18/03/16 18:00

Another classic Friday night in the Campbell household consisted of the boy at Football training, late home from work, parents come to visit, girls at the horses all as a warm up to going out with my wife to see Rudimental in concert at Rock City which was my birthday present.

I would like to paint a perfect picture of this but unfortunately that would be a lie. In the end we left the house at approximately 8:50pm when my little boy Callum had a melt down and decided he couldn’t go to bed because he was feeling unwell. We raced on the tram to Rock City as fast as we could to arrive (obviously) after the show had started. But don’t worry there is a happy ending and it starts here.

In case you were unaware, Rudimental remixed Ed Sheeran’s Bloodstream with dramatic effect to produce an astonishing result you can view a YouTube video of it here. This song means quite a lot to me for various reasons but mostly because when I did my big Triathlon last year, in the darkest part of the bike as the rain started to come down with more than an hour still to go and 25 miles still to ride, I found myself on a lonely road in the middle of Nottingham with no one there (it felt like I had taken a wrong turn) so I decided to sing this song to myself. Ridiculous sounding I know but I drew huge inspiration from the line “All the voices in my mind, calling out across the line”. It still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up as I put it down here in the blog.

So the happy ending goes like this… we got there late, a bit stressed and berating ourselves and wishing we had just put our pajamas on and gone to bed and walked straight into Rock City for that song to start. In the end we only managed about 55 minutes of the gig but I saw all of the songs I wanted to see. They were an astonishing outfit (which i’ll blog about later) a true collaboration of friendship and artistry which would be a joy to try and mimic but Bloodstream stood out for me.

In some of the things that come later Bloodstream will be important again but after what has been a really tough time for me for one reason or another it’s like a bubble of inspiration opened in mind and I got back to where I was supposed to be.

Sometimes it just takes the smallest things.
