12 Days of Christmas Part 2 - Understanding Sleeping

So, part one of this little series of blogs is here and it was about diary writing. The second one I wanted to investigate through the Christmas holidays with sleeping.

Firstly and most importantly I have not got this bit right at all, but I continue to try and strive to be better, because I feel that it is fundamental to health and happiness for not just me but really for everybody.

Most of modern life is designed, it seems, to make us sleep less. When, to a point the most important thing is to sleep more.

The first place to turn if you’re interested in understanding the importance of sleep is “Why we sleep” by Matthew Walker.

Moving on from that there is hundreds of pieces of information and material that you could use but the fundamental essence of this is that you need “eight hours of sleep opportunity” a night and as much deep NREM (Non-Rapid Eye Movement) sleep per night.

Not only is improving your sleep linked to reducing the risk of hosting terrible diseases, but it just makes you feel better and it just makes you feel happier.

Society has taken us to a point where we think sleeping is a waste because it reduces our possibility of making money or watching television.

Once you get over the hump and understand the importance and see it as a treat, it becomes the most wonderful thing.

I also subscribe to napping which is controversial as others don’t but from my point of view, whenever I can possibly manage, I take 15 minutes in the middle and then I get back to work or whatever I am doing.

One of the modern concepts is what people call a "nappuccino", where you take a strong coffee before you go for your nap and then wake up with your coffee reinvigorating.

This is quite a good idea if you’re trying to work hard, but we should all be reducing our caffeine intake probably, so you can take that as you see it.

For me the perfect situation is a 15 minute nap at lunch time, immediately after I have eaten, between 12-2pm.

Previous reports suggested that is worth about 3 hours sleep a night and there are some extraordinary stories about Ellen the MacArthur sailing around the world on napping only.

If I have my 15 minute nap in the middle of the day, it is sleep by 11pm and awake by 7am.

I would love to tell you, that that is what happens every day, but in truth it is a goal that I am striving towards and one you might want to think about.
