Sh*te Briney Objects

A deliberate spelling mistake to reference things that we all chase after, which are, in fact, worthless.

For sh*t, think well, sh*te, and for briney, think well, salty.

The bright shiny objects that we chase are actually something else.

I had the most extraordinary conversation with the most extraordinary woman in the past few weeks. She used to be married into a family who were rich beyond all wealth, an unbelievable circumstance, the ‘dream ticket’. She has the insight of someone who has been there and decided this is not the place to be.

I told her the story of my Omega watch, which I've now had the full refund for after it fell off my wrist twice (Never buying a fancy watch again). Bizarrely and ashamedly, I got sucked into a world of thinking that I had to have that when I travelled abroad for meetings because everybody else did. How wrong I was, how stupid I was, how shallow I am.

The Omega watch was a sh*te briney object; there are many of those around.

For me, I need to get back to substance. All of the things which are important to me, like the things that surround me in my office, are of a completely non-financial intangible benefit to me. They remind me of places I've been or people I've met or things I've done.

I understand that's a personal situation, but certainly for me (and I think for almost everyone), the accumulation of the sh*te and the briney, it doesn't cut it.

We chatted together, the lady and I, and I explained the story to her, and she just looked at me and said, “It's all a load of sh*te, that stuff, a complete load of sh*te”.

How wise she is, how wise to have been there and gotten out.

Stronger than most of us, I guess.
