If I had graduated this year,(instead of 31 years ago), but with all the knowledge I've had over the last 31 years, there are some changes, some differences I might take to the way I navigate my life forward in the second half of the 1st year of graduation and so I thought I would pop these down now, most as a reflection to myself, but also as a point for your own discussion with yourself.
Number one,
As I returned to work in January, I would also work harder, not less hard.
Number two,
The harder work that I was carrying out would be smarter, and I would do it with a plan. I would plan to educate myself as well as possible, to upskill as much as feasible, and to create a situation where I was able to save some money from the money that I was earning at the moment.
Number three,
I would take some time away to think and to speak to people who are clever about what the world might look like 5 years from now in dentistry and in the career that I've chosen, and I would modify my plan towards that 5 years, not away from it.
Number four,
I would resolve to find time in the busy schedule that I will undoubtedly now have for health and for investment in my ‘ intangible assets’.
Intangible assets are the things you collect, which are of no obvious financial value, such as education and experience, health, motivation, and joy.
The things I would not do when I reached January of 2026, having been qualified for six months, are the following.
Number one,
Look forward towards getting the biggest NHS contract as an associate that I could, because that would lead to potentially the end of all the wonderful things in my life that it would be possible to have.
Number two,
I would not cut down my working time; I would increase it. But perhaps not increase it entirely on the clinical aspect, but on other aspects to make my dentistry better.
And Number three,
I would build a network, as many people as I could, who I wanted to be like, people who inspired me, and I would keep in contact with them for the rest of my life.
